Couples, John Updike, Knopf, 1968 1st edition, 3rd printing before publication (4/15/68), 458 pages plus author's note. Description: book; Blue boards with silver text to spine and front, top edge dyed aqua-blue, Borzoi dog blind embossed on back board. Dust jacket; Blue illustration of W. Blake's "Adam and Eve Sleeping," behind white, black and lime-green text, Borzoi dog on spine, front flap not price clipped, dated 4/68 on lower edge, rear flap lists author's first four books, rear panel is text free. Condition: Book; Very good. Bright and clean, free of any marks, top edge stain is only slightly sunned, points curve in slightly but are not rubbed, top and bottom spine soft and slightly sunned but not rubbed, slight loss of silver to the title's first two letters but still very bright. One soft crease in spine from top to bottom, else fine example. Dust jacket; Near fine. Bright and clean, no signs of sunning, one ½-inch closed tear on the top of spine, rear board. Light rubbing to the lower edge of front panel and points, else a fine example with a strong definition on the spine between white text in the title and lime-green text in the author's name. I don't think this book as ever been exposed to strong sunlight as the aqua-blue dye on the top edge, while slightly faded, is uniform in color across all pages. Not price clipped, now protected in Brodart.
